Huawei uses its own processor, called Kirin, on phones like the P20 Pro . It announced the next-generation system-on-a-chip in IFA 2018: Kirin 980 is 20% faster than its predecessor, and promises to outperform Snapdragon 845.
According to Huawei, the Kirin 980 is the first 7nm-on-a-chip system to hit the market. It is also the first with ARM Cortex-A76 cores , a 1.4 Gb / s 4G modem, dual neural processing unit, and faster LPDDR4X RAM support of 2,133 MHz.
The maker is determined to “defeat” the Snapdragon 845. It says that the Kirin 980 achieves a 22% higher frame rate in games consuming 32% less power. In addition, it can open apps faster by having 22% lower latency and 20% higher bandwidth.
Kirin 980 has eight cores and a 50% faster graphics chip
There are eight cores in total. Two large Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.6 GHz are activated for more demanding tasks such as games. Two intermediate 1.92 GHz cores help in processes such as surfing the web.
In turn, the four Cortex-A55 cores run at 1.8 GHz and consume less power; they take care of background processes such as music playback. The Kirin 980 can combine different types of cores.
It is also the first with the Mali-G76 graphics chip . The ARM promises performance up to 50% higher than the previous generation (G72), plus 30% more energy efficiency.
This chip is manufactured in the 7 nanometer process from TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company). This leads to up to 20% faster performance, and up to 40% lower power consumption compared to 10nm processors.
Highest performance in artificial intelligence, 4G and Wi-Fi
The Kirin 980 has two NPUs (neural processing units). Huawei says they are capable of running intelligence tasks faster than their competitors. Its chip can recognize up to 4,500 images per minute in the Resnet 50 model, compared to 2,371 in Snapdragon 845 and only 1,458 in Apple A11.
Also we have here a dual ISP (image signal processor), which promises to be 46% faster in processing camera images than its predecessor, the Kirin 970 .
Not over yet. The Kirin 980 has faster RAM support – 2,133 MHz LPDDR4X – which should speed up multitasking. It comes with LTE Cat.21 modem , which allows speeds up to 1.4 Gb / s in 4G. And it will be compatible with the Balong 5G modem for next generation networks.
Huawei says it offers the world’s fastest Wi-Fi on a smartphone: its chipset speeds up to 1,732 Mb / s, versus the Snapdragon 845’s 866 Mb / s with a Qualcomm modem. Even the GPS must be more precise thanks to the dual frequency positioning.
